Charting the Unknown: Unveiling the Impact of Esoteric Practices on Women's Pleasure

In 2022 I decided to apply for a PHD. My thesis was to be on the effects of esoteric practices on the sexual well-being of women.

At the time there was a rise in conversations around scientific V’s spiritual and the ethics of holistic practices that weren’t backed by research were being called into question.

Creating Research Where None Exists

I have a background in academia and have carried out academic research for my Masters degree and yet now I find myself swimming on the other side of the pool where my work is an amalgamation of modalities and spiritual practices that fall outside of the traditional institutions of training & learning.

Knowing both worlds, the merging of the two fascinated me and as the dissenting voices grew I wanted to shout from the rooftops that this work is not backed by research simply because THERE IS NO RESEARCH!

Not because the research says it’s effective or ineffective, but because research on these topics simply does not exist.

And so, I came up with a solution… I was going to create the research!

Oh my god babes, I was soo buzzed! I couldn’t wait to get my teeth stuck into it all and create studies using these practices and see what actual results came through! I was compiling notes of all the angles I would need to explore and consider to put this all together. I had my geek glasses firmly on and was not-so-secretly getting high off the prospect of becoming DOCTOR WHITE, PROFESSOR OF WOMEN’S PUSSIES & PLEASURE (or something similar) 🤓.

I came up with a brief proposal and, giddy with excitement, sent it out to the universities across the country that had departments for sexuality studies.

The Dream Meets Reality

I was f*cking bouncing off the walls when the head of dept came back to me with a big fat enthusiastic YES to my idea. She was into it, thought I’d be great at it and wanted to take it further. She told me I needed to find a supervisor so I should look through and choose a lecturer who had expertise in the field and reach out to them and ask.

And this is where the dream ended… because there was no one in the faculty that had expertise in this field or even a thread of what I was wanting to study…

The Pitfalls of Formal Routes & Accreditation

This is an example of the pitfalls of established institutions and formal routes within this work. I have also found it when trying to get my female sexuality practitioner training accredited… you can only get the stamp of approval from the big bods if you are somehow replicating or building on something that has already been done.

Holistic Reclamation of Female Sexuality

So, with all the criticism of the unregulated and the not-research-backed work I do, the gift here is that I have the space to be creative, I have the freedom to really see what has worked for me and share that with my clients and students, for it to evolve as I evolve. And I’m not bound by the red tape of governing boards telling me what I can and can’t do (who appoints them anyway?!).

This enables the full flow and expression of my creative energy because THAT IS WHAT THIS WORK IS ALL ABOUT!

I have not completely let go of my fantasies of being a DOCTOR just yet but right now I’m focussing on doing what I do best - transforming the lives of women through the holistic reclamation of their sexuality, the research being the lived experience of every woman this work touches!
